Another new minimalist swimwear option has become available for women who just want to get in the water. The latest comes from NYC-based technical swimwear brand Onia, which thoughtfully designs classy pieces made from high-quality, high-performing fabrics. They’ve got every part of the beach day covered, from swim trunks to layering garments to casual dress shirts for the nighttime bonfire, but had been only available for men—until now. Today, Onia launches their first women’s collection, a big sigh of relief for those who are looking for a simple, go-to swimsuit that doesn’t sacrifice sexiness for functionality. From one-pieces with low scoop backs to sporty bikini tops (most of which are monochrome) and even swim shorts, the overall impression is effortlessness.

“The concept for the collection started with dichotomy and a summer well-travelled,” Onia co-founder Carl Cunow (and former Steven Alan executive) tells CH. “After visiting Iceland and Croatia separately, we were drawn to the distinct personality of each location. Aside from the obvious climate contrast. Iceland, with its vast, breathtaking nature and simple lifestyle is a stark contrast to the fast-paced bustle of Croatia, lively with festivals and colorful energy.” Their goal, he explains, was to create versatile swimsuits that can take you anywhere.

“While designing the women’s collection, we remained synonymous to our men’s collection with our design approach,” Cunow continues. “The clean seams that lay flush on a woman’s body, the absence of hardware and the incredibly smooth and soft hand-feel of our swim fabric were very important to us. We wanted to create swimwear that complements a woman’s body and wardrobe rather than compete with it.”

Every made-for-the-beach piece that Onia creates always has functionality in mind, even down to the accessories. Their unisex, water-resistant Montrose shoe, for example, fuses the sole of a flip-flop with their quick-drying nylon/cotton swim fabric for a casual sneaker look minus the soggy aftermath. Their oversized Tilden towels are also features the same signature swim fabric on one side, with terry on the reverse.

The women’s collection launches today and is available to purchase from Onia’s online shop, and some selects will also be stocked at Theory and Intermix stores.
