Pivot from Defy Bags
The military-grade bag maker goes streamlined
Based in Chicago, Defy is a manufacturer of heavy-duty bags constructed from heavy-duty military-grade and upcycled materials. The products are unabashedly overkill—considering their customers are mostly techies and non-traditional businessmen—but as founder Chris Tag explains, the feel of the materials in hand justifies the lot. Defy Bags has just announced the launch of Pivot, a laptop bag with serious chops that’s a bit more formal and streamlined than the vintage aesthetic of their other work.
“We settled on 1000 Cordura denier fabric,” says Tag of the Pivot’s exterior. “It’s really thick, equally as indestructible as our other materials, but it has more of a sporty, clean-cut vibe. We’re colliding that with military truck tarp pockets, so it’s a bit of a departure for us.” The AustriAlpin Cobra quick release buckles are the same as used by special forces paratroopers, and the fact that they cost $30 each goes a long way to justifying the Pivot’s $262 price tag. The messenger-style bag is capable of holding a 15-inch laptop in a dedicated sleeve and has a secondary compartment for general storage.
Cut and sewn by Tag and his team in Chicago, the bags are only in-store at a handful of stockists throughout the country. For their line of leather accessories, Pivot leveraged fellow Chicago company Horween to create covetable iPad cases, iPhone sleeves and wallets. These, along with the rest of the bags from Defy can be purchased at their online shop.
