SIHH 2014: Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days
One of the most innovative brands in watchmaking debuts pieces not for your wrist
Following the success of last year’s introduction of the
Panerai Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica—a unique, gorgeous stealthy black ceramic watch with a skeleton movement—Panerai caught our attention with the introduction of two new 50mm pocket watches; both with a limited production of only 50 pieces and sporting the same cushion-shaped case of the GMT Ceramica, the Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Bianco and the Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Rosso. The two watches debuted at this year’s SIHH watch fair and had both buyers and journalists under their spell.
Though not very popular or as common as they once were, pocket watches still have the power to enchant, and the Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days (despite its awkward name) does just that. Under the surface the two watches share the same movement, a new version of the in-house Panerai P.3001/10 caliber which received a good deal of decorative work including skeletonized bridges and chamferred barrels. All of this beautiful detailed work can be appreciated when opening the rear cover to reveal the movement.
Both watches feature Panerai’s well-known style on their similar faces, and both have the Super-LumiNova which makes the simple baton hour markers and the Arabic numerals at 12, three, six and nine glow in the dark. Accompanying the watch is a 40cm, 18 carat gold nautical-inspired chain. One of our favorite features is the three-day power reserve, viewable from the back of the watch. And should one desire to dive with the expensive timepiece in tow, rest assured that it can handle depths of 50 meters.
The Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Bianco sells for $75,700, and the Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Rosso for $71,800.
