Three stylish performance-wear brands for women on the go
A multi-functional wardrobe is indispensable for any city woman who has a closet the size of a shoebox. And we’re not looking to lug around an extra set of clothes on the commute to work, either, while managing to find spare time for the gym or park or even errands. Below are three independent, applause-worthy apparel brands creating clothes that don’t scream, “All I do is Soulcycle.” Rather, they are sleek, simple and, most importantly, high-performing pieces that have you ready to tackle whatever surprise hits your hectic schedule throughout the entire day. Plus, there’s little chance of it clashing with what you already own.
Vyayama
Launched in June, Vyayama’s debut monochrome Kalablak collection covers all you need with just five styles: a bralette, tank (with striking yet delicate strap design), crop top, shorts and leggings. Though the support and coverage was designed specifically for motion, the all-black pieces have snuck their way into Saturday night to Sunday brunch attire, too. The NYC-based line was founded as a necessary alternative to synthetic yoga wear, choosing to use a custom Tencel (a hypoallergenic fiber made from wood pulp cellulose) and elastane blend; all of which is certified Oeko-Tex standard 100, and supremely comfortable and firm. The same styles are also available in a textural leopard-like “shadow print” if you like to stand out from the pack; and there’s also luxe layering options, like a seamless Italian-spun cashmere sweater.
ADAY
It’s hard not to feel like a superwoman dressed in ADAY. The minimalist, contemporary fashion brand, upon closer look, boasts technologically advanced fabrics that work hard whether you’re running to a meeting or beating your personal best. Their sculpted Throw + Roll leggings have a side hip pocket for your phone and MetroCard and are made in the same factory as Michael Phelps’ swimsuits. (And they are most of the time sold out, so pre-ordering is wise). What’s in stock, however, is ADAY’s new high-waisted version of the style: Throw It Higher, with gunmetal zippers, heat-sealed bonded seams, compression fabric, and a squeezing double-layered waistband.
Full Court
Set designer and prop stylist Marguerite Wade started Full Court when she couldn’t find a pair of leggings with a ball pocket. After debuting at Opening Ceremony, the city-inspired tennis line has branched out into a formidable activewear option that can be worn all day. Produced in Portland, Oregon, the pieces feature moisture-wicking, odor-resistant and breathable fabrics plus well-tailored, bold fits that keep up with NYC’s hunger for style and personality.
