An outdoor collaboration drawing on different design philosophies

For most outdoor brands, the chief objective of their products is to heighten the outdoor experience—whether that means keeping you dry in a sudden downpour or making a piece of gear that’s so faithful it becomes an adventure companion. Colorado-based bag and clothing maker Topo Designs looks to simplify the outdoor experiences through straightforward, handcrafted quality products. Meanwhile Annecy, France-based outdoor behemoth Salomon opts for state-of-the-art technologies and innovative design. The companies have different approaches, but the same goal: better experiences through better gear. The new Topo Designs + Salomon collaboration sees the two companies giving a new twist on one of each of their standout offerings.

The Topo + Salomon Rover Pack ($159) is a take on Topo’s Rover, a classic flip-top backpack. For the collaboration, Topo and Salomon updated a few material and color features. A Horween leather base promises to age gracefully with each excursion and the bag’s upper (handmade in Topo’s Colorado workshop) is made of ultra-tough 500d Cordura fabric. Salomon’s Instinct Pro shoe is one of the most decorated mountain shoes on the market. The collaboration edition ($140) pulls design notes from Topo’s bags with a natural leather outer, color-contrasting details and hints of Cordura for extra durability.
