Watches of New York Fashion Week: Men’s
Three new timepieces seen on wrists during SS18 previews, and well-timed exhibitions
With another fashion week passing through New York—this time dedicated to men—the city’s cultural consciousness briefly shifted to runway shows and presentations. Dozens of menswear brands and designers unveiled their SS18 looks and from Raf Simons to Landlord, EFM and Patrik Ervell we were given a glimpse at what the world might be wearing down the line. And in the midst of it all, every so often, designers accessorized their models with watches or announced collaboratively-designed timepieces—and to be honest, that was just as compelling. As New York Fashion Week: Men’s was underway, the world of wristwatches found other ways to make its presence felt in the city—from a must-see (and free) Patek Philippe exhibition at Cipriani 42nd Street to the Audemars Piguet Art Commissions’ Sun Xun-produced 3D-film on electronic billboards in Times Square. A watch is still functional, decorative item that speaks much about the wearer. The aforementioned exhibitions act as a reminder of this, while the three watches below represent such a sentiment.
Todd Snyder + Timex: The Blackjack Watch
The latest addition to the Todd Snyder and Timex collaboration that we can’t seem to get enough of, The Blackjack ($138) references a ’70s style drawn from the watch brand’s archives—coupled with Snyder’s sleek NYC style. The timepiece made its debut at Snyder’s SS18 show, centered around the concept of encountering counter culture. Beyond the exceptionally reasonable price of the watch, we’re quite taken with the allusion toward Formula One speed dials—and perhaps a tip to mid-century Monaco casinos and the allure of the roulette wheel.
Robert Geller + G-Shock: Limited Edition G-Steel
While Robert Geller didn’t adorn his models with G-Shock pieces this season, as he did for his 10th Anniversary FW17 Presentation in January 2017 (and the four previous runway shows), the designer has just released a collaborative watch with the brand. The Limited Edition G-Shock GST200RBG-1A ($420) takes its design cues from Geller’s appreciation for and adventures in Tokyo’s urban developments. Geller designed the G-Steel wristwatch himself, incorporating gold accents on the face and a dark fuchsia seconds-hand that references his latest collection. Stainless steel is the defining material of the incredibly functional piece.
Citizen: Eco-Drive
On the wrists of the models at Christopher Lowman‘s Harvard Punk’d presentation—inspired by the woes and battles of today’s college students—guests saw the latest
from Citizen‘s Eco-Drive collection ($325-650). Lowman focused on material quality—from Italian suede and lambskin imports to satin from Australia and French Terry. There’s a refined collegiate, or post-collegiate, or perhaps even an “I’ve left college because I know what I’m doing” aura to the ready-to-wear. The modern, sporty-meets-classy Citizen wristwatches—powered by light thank to the Eco-Drive Technology—accentuate Lowman’s vision.
