Y-3 Launches Y-3 Sport

The Yohji Yamamoto-led line debuts cutting-edge performancewear that retains all of its street cred

Though Y-3 is a beautiful collaboration between avant-garde Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto and global sportswear brand adidas, surprisingly, it’s always been a fashion-first line. After 15 years, Yamamoto has thought it the proper time to go deep into Y-3’s DNA and design its first-ever fully functional sport line. Further fusing Yamamoto’s renegade, statement aesthetic with adidas’ innovative fabrics and tech, Y-3 Sport (for all genders) launches today. It’s versatile sportswear with street cred—not a hint of neon in sight.

“Y-3 Sport is a progression. It will change how people think about sports clothing for years to come,” says Yamamoto in an official statement. Adds Senior Director of Design at Y-3 Lawrence Midwood, “The Y-3 Sport ideal is really about finding an alternative to the established sportswear staples. Offering our consumer something different, something created purely with them in mind and not conforming at all to the established rules or methodologies. I see this first collection as a strong statement of intent.”

The capsule collection is organized into three sections: approach, ultralight (using lightweight waterproof fabric that weighs just 38g) and base layer. Think overlayer pants for wind and rain protection, bandeau pants that transform into a jumpsuit for women, jackets with lasered ventilation tech, discreet hi-vis stripes, leggings for people who don’t wear leggings—and everything in a stunning silhouette (we might, however, question the functionality of the long-sleeve mesh top for workouts). There’s also a backpack that hugs the wearer quite closely. The crown jewel of the capsule collection of course are the shoes—calling them sneakers would feel debasing. The Approach shoe—with a comfortable Primeknit sock bootie—has adidas’ BOOST tech plus Torsion system arch support.

Y-3 Sport launches today at select stockists and from Y-3’s official website; prices range from $105 to $880 for apparel, $365 to $795 for footwear.
