Protective sleeves and shells for the scaled-down iPad

Apple launched the much-anticipated iPad mini last week, and with it their own smart cover—a familiar folding design only made a touch more magical by the reduction of materials and realignment of magnets so that the edges lock together when folded in to a stand. Of course, there were many new cases launched by other manufacturers as well; the following are our favorites for their effective protection and versatile design.

Incipio

Inspired by the mini’s flexibility, Incipio strived to design a case that provides complete protection and mobility. Backed in suede nubuck the LGND case cleverly converts to sit comfortably on a lap or table and is easily folded down to provide complete protection for travel. The case is set to sell for $30 through Incipio’s website.

Rickshaw Bagworks

Made-to-order, San Francisco-based Rickshaw Bagworks‘ new iPad mini cases combine sustainability and customization. Consumers can choose from a variety of laser-cut bindings and hand-sewn fabrics, including waterproof and tweed options. Rickshaw’s iPad mini sleeves are available now between $40-$50.

DODOcase Classic

Solid and lightweight, the DODOcase Classic for iPad mini ($60) uses a bamboo frame to protect the tablet. In spite of the fully encompassed casing, DODOcase allows access to all external buttons and ports. The case is magnetized to sleep and wake the iPad mini and allows for angled viewing for watching video and typing. With a sturdy, cloth-covered hardback design and elastic closure, the DODOcase is ideal for those interested in the appearance of a hand-bound book.

Mujjo Sleeve

In true Mujjo style, the accessories company has taken the wool and leather aesthetic of their iPad sleeve and appropriated it for the new, smaller size, allowing room for the smart cover as well. The handcrafted slip case exemplifies the tenets of contemporary Dutch design to create a warm home for the iPad mini. At present a “work in progress,” the sleeve is expected to drop soon at a price of €45.

Comparable to their model for the iPad, Zagg‘s solution for Apple’s latest product incorporates a keyboard and a cover into one. Zagg’s case is designed to mimic the spacing on a full-sized keyboard, adding function and comfort to the iPad mini while also providing protection. The case is available through Zagg for $90.
