Swiss-made e-bikes boasting up to 33mph of kick with the look and feel of a city commuter
Best known for their chocolate, watches and banks, the Swiss are also quite skilled bicycle makers as it turns out. If the BMC + Lamborghini collaboration wasn’t proof enough, see Stromer and new ST1 pedal-assisted electric bicycle. Now available for the first time stateside, the highly engineered electric bicycle resembles more of a city cruiser than the moped-looking bikes your delivery man rides—a design shift we’re more than pleased with. By leaning more toward a traditional frame geometry and monochrome colorway the new ST1 e-bike stands to go relatively unnoticed on the street—until it’s flying past the pack at up to 33 MPH that is.
Fully integrated into the frame’s downtube, a single 500 kWh battery—guaranteeing 750 full charge cycles—powers the Shimano drivetrain, all the while boasting a touring range between 80-100 km. To make sure all is working efficiently, an onboard interface the size of an iPod Nano is mounted on the handlebars. The digital readout shows the rider battery levels and consumption rates, current and average speed, distance traveled, duration and time of day.
Available now to North America, the ST1 e-bike can be found at Stromer dealers where it sells for around $3,500. If the asking price is a bit steep Stromer is currently promoting an ST1 giveaway for US residents, ending 17 May 2013.
