There’s no denying it, our smartphones have essentially become an extension of our bodies. Thankfully, in recent years, a handful of companies have broken ground in waterproofing these fragile pieces of technology that we depend on so much. Whether you have a summer full of aquatic activities ahead or if you’re just accident-prone, the following water-resistant phones, waterproof cases and waterproofing technologies will surely make your life easier.
Kyocera Hydro Edge
Able to withstand up to 30 minutes in over three feet of water, the new Hydro Edge is designed to be a dependable companion in the outdoors without weighing you down. On the smaller side of the smartphone spectrum, this Android phone features a 5.0 megapixel camera and a 4″ touch-screen—although neither will work under water. Keep an eye out for this water-resistant phone stateside at Sprint and Boost Mobile in the coming weeks.
Huawei Ascend D2
Released last month, the water-resistant Ascend D2 from Chinese information and communications tech brand Huawei boasts a 5″ super-retina display and a whopping 13 megapixel camera—although again, none of this will work underwater. Gorilla glass protects the impressive screen and an overall secret coating keeps the substantial smartphone water-resistant in up to a meter of water. The Huawei Ascend D2 is available now in the UK and China.
Sony Xperia ZR
As the only phone we’ve come across to flat out claim waterproof over water-resistant, the Android-driven Xperia ZR stands out among its peers with an impressive 4.6″ HD display and 13 megapixel camera that you can actually use underwater—as in, you can take this serious piece of technology swimming. The underwater operability extends to a camera that can shoot from a locked screen or go from sleep to functional in under a second. Keep an eye out for the Xperia ZR this summer in European and American markets.
Liquipel Watersafe Technology
What may possibly be the most significant leap in personal electronic protection ever, Liquipel uses a highly sophisticated self-sealing coating to completely waterproof your device. The intelligent solution works on a molecular level, coating both the interior and exterior of your phone without trapping heat or adding any noticeable weight or bulk. No plugs or rubberized seals mean water rolls right into your phone, then out, without leaving a mark—or turning those pesky little warranty-voiding water-detection stickers red. The solution can be applied to phones, tablets, headphones and even laptops through their mail-in program for between $60-80, or you can buy pre-treated devices directly. The only downside is that, like the Hydro Edge and Ascend D2, treated devices cannot be operated underwater.

The most simple option, of course, is a waterproof case, and Pelican is one of the most trusted names in heavy duty, all-conditions impervious cases. The Vault iPhone 5 Case is a tad bulky, but it will protect against pretty much anything you throw at it. Made of aircraft-grade aluminum, the fully sealed case absorbs shock when dropped and shields the phone from full submersion in any liquid. Available now for $80 and soon in Galexy S sizes as well.
E-Case iPhone5 Case
Best for those who only need waterproofing at specific times, the zip-lock like E-Case allows for easy on and off and full protection in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. Plus the clear window is touchscreen-compatible so you can use your phone and even take pictures in the worst of weather. Welded seams and a die-cut lash point make it reliable and adventure-ready.
