City Guides: Detroit
An update to our favorite places for food, drink, art and fun in the ever-evolving and inspiring Motor City
Since overhauling our City Guides last fall, we’ve had many an opportunity to make our way back to Detroit and delve further into one of the most culturally rich cities in the country. While there, various team members found that the ever-expanding urban revitalization has lead to the creation of many new, valuable venues. And Detroit’s vibrant creative class, which invested in the city when times were tough (and they were tough), has resulted in a number of restaurants, shops and buildings that needn’t feel overshadowed by those in coastal cities that go by initials only.
While Shinola’s retail space and raw juice bar is always a must-stop, and Astro Coffee serves up what is quite likely the best artisanal cup of joe in the Motor City, there is always something new opening in Detroit. Last year, two cousins raised $19,000 on Kickstarter and launched Rose’s Fine Food—a revitalized ’60s diner specializing in made-from-scratch specialties using local ingredients. Music venue and gallery space Trinosophes has opened, providing chill cafe vibes during the day, plus frequent art exhibitions and musical performances at night. And, though not new, cocktail haven Sugar House has been added for those keen on old world drinks and craft beers.
