For those searching for a bag that is rugged, handsome, intelligently designed and will last a cross-country motorcycle journey (and further), the Military Duffle Backpack from Portland-based Collected Works Co. fits the bill. All of the products from the brand are born from of a genuine need from founders Jacob Hinmon and Patrick Vail—when they can’t find what they need, they make it. Inspired by classic military duffle designs of the past, Vail and Hinmon added design features for the modern adventurer, including neat, streamlined inner-organizers for laptops, tablets and priority cargo—like passports or cash. A hearty, durable 18-ounce waxed canvas repels water and stands up to harsh conditions in the great outdoors and urban jungle alike. The Collected Works Co. team tapped the local Portland experts at Tanner Goods for the burly nine-ounce Horween Chromexcel leather straps (which are padded at the shoulder).

At $440, it certainly doesn’t come cheap, but this American-made and sourced pack will remain in the family for adventures and generations to come. Available online from Collected Works Co. in three muted tones.
