Updated daily, the Buy section is a deep directory of stuff we love. From this collection we organize Gift Guides for the holiday season and special occasions all year long.
From Australian chef, restaurant-owner and plant-based poster girl Shannon Martinez comes Vegan With Bite, her third cookbook. With approachable recipes for tasty dishes and grocery shopping tips, the book also provides information about products that are believed to be vegan but aren’t—including some surprising ingredients like bread crumbs. Featuring recipes like soufflé pancakes, shakshuka with coriander dumplings, mapo tofu, congee and much more, Vegan With Bite offers plenty for longtime vegans, newcomers and carnivores looking to reduce their meat and dairy consumption.
Cann’s cannabis-infused “social” tonics offer a gentle buzz from a 2:1 CBD to THC ratio. Even if one were to drink the entire six-pack, just 12 milligrams would be consumed—a relatively standard dose for edibles. Our favorite iteration, the smooth and citrusy Grapefruit Rosemary flavor, goes down with a slight viscosity and pleasant carbonation. Of course, that’s all without the residual impact of alcoholic drinks.
With a top speed of 16mph, mobility company Onewheel’s new Pint model proves powerful but less cumbersome than earlier editions. While users stand on this iteration, the same as previous models, both the wheel and the platform are considerably smaller. The Pint promises six to eight miles of range over even terrain—sidewalks, paved streets, and blacktop. Every order comes with the Pint home charger and an attachable Maghandle.
Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn’s Halsey & Lewis is first and foremost a record store, carrying all types of music, but with a focus on funk and soul. Also a corner store-style purveyor, they offer everything from candles to face masks and skincare products. Their “Don’t Look For Love, Look For Records” (also available as “Don’t Look For Love, Look For Books”) tote perfectly suits introverts, and is the ideal size to carry 12-inch vinyl.
While David Byrne may be a better-known name, it was drummer Chris Frantz who convinced fellow RISD classmates Byrne and Tina Weymouth to move to NYC and start Talking Heads. In Frantz’s Remain in Love: Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Tina, he tells his version of Talking Heads tales—including the epic 1977 tour with the Ramones and how Byrne “sneaked out of Talking Heads” in the early ’90s—as well as stories surrounding Tom Tom Club, the spin-off band he founded with Weymouth. While never diving too deep into nuance, the book paints an intriguing picture filled with unheard anecdotes and plenty of art-school charm.
Available in 11 different colorways, these 100% cotton denim aprons from Big Bud Press are designed, sewn and dyed in Los Angeles. Crafted from 100% organic cotton, Desmond & Dempsey’s lightweight pajamas boast bold designs in opulent tones but maintain a classic silhouette. The Circe Lion print features pink lions over rich green with piped lapels and cuffs, making them more sophisticated than most humble pajamas. Made for all genders (with options for pants or shorts) and also available for kids, they arrive in lavish packaging—making them ideal for gifting.
Streicher Goods founder Ethan Streicher produces one-off ceramic objects that vary in function—be that lighting, storage or decoration—and he purposefully never produces the same one twice (unless you request a custom order, which he accepts year-round). This particular design, called the Faux Raku Vase, was supposed to be an orange and white, creamsicle-like hue. The closure of his communal studio and a few accidents in the kiln produced this burnt, brown and black (and slightly orange) vase, which he likens to the traditional Japanese Raku method. Handmade by Streicher in Brooklyn, the Faux Raku vase stands five inches wide and nine inches tall.
From self-taught jeweler and social worker Vanessa Miller, the brand Black Queer Magic’s powerful pieces embrace the natural beauty of stones and precious metal—evidenced by these hand-strung crystal bracelets, each featuring brass accents. Miller donates a portion of their sales directly to Black LGBTQ people in the healing and creative communities. They also take custom jewelry orders.
Music streaming platform SoundCloud partnered with clothing brand and design team GRVTY (aka Orlando Urbina and Marshall Tan) for a collaborative apparel collection called Pure & Wondrous Sounds. With nods to SoundCloud’s color scheme and a handful of GRVTY’s musical and visual influences, the collection drops today. The “SC-X700” long-sleeve shirt salutes Tom Wong and Coxsone Dodd, two influential figures in the Jamaican sound system circuit and the development of ska and reggae throughout the ’50s and ’60s. Specifically, Urbina and Tan call out Wong’s history as a hardware store-owner, which led him to build out his own systems with equipment from his shop. They say their shirt is an homage to “all those who built physical structures that brought sound to the streets and to the people.”
Any fitness enthusiast—especially those with a fondness for boxing—will confirm the impact and efficiency of jumping rope. Easy and inexpensive, this activity also eschews the need for bulky gear. CROSSROPE’s Get Lean Jump Rope Set (2020) includes the brand’s newest handles, .25-pound and .5-pound ropes (which are offered in multiple lengths and are easily swapped), a carrying pouch and access to the free version of the workout app—everything you need to jump with confidence.
Awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance for comfortability and performance, the X-SCAPE NBK Low by Deckers Lab are a sneaker, slipper and performance shoe hybrid. On the exterior, an EcoTan nubuck leather upper flows into an ultra-soft Xponent HD midsole. Inside, a high-rise heel stabilizes the foot, while a Looped Wool liner offers thermoregulation and sweat-wicking. The X-SCAPE NBK Low model is available in an array of colors, but our favorite remains the classic black-and-white combination, which proves viable for everyday or exercise wear.
For their new Essence collection, Swiss watch brand Mondaine emphasizes sustainability. Produced at the brand’s now 80% solar-powered factory in Biberist, Switzerland, the watch incorporates recycled PET bottles for its multi-purpose pouch and natural rubber for its strap, glass powder for its crystal and Rizinus (aka castor oil) for the 41mm watch case. The brand does not sacrifice any of its signature design either. Image courtesy of Mondaine
From CH favorite BFGF, the VARIOUS STAGES woven blanket features several of Lilian Martinez’s signature motifs: basketballs, leaves, fruits, Nike swooshes and more. On the edges, contrasting fringe adds even more flair. The cotton/polyester blend blanket measures out to 71 by 53 inches. Each one is made to order and Martinez suggests buyers allow at least one week for production and delivery.
Poet Louise Glück—the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 27 years—has 12 extraordinary books to her name. One of our favorites, The Seven Ages, proves to be perhaps her most audacious. The 44 poems within explore memory and dreams while facing potential futures and death. Beautiful and at times sardonic, Glück’s words remind readers of the boundlessness of writing.
