Updated daily, the Buy section is a deep directory of stuff we love. From this collection we organize Gift Guides for the holiday season and special occasions all year long.
With 100% of the proceeds from its sales donated to the Marsha P Johnson Institute, this shirt celebrates the LGBTQ+ community in many ways. The brand Very Good Light teamed up with artist Humberto Cruz (aka ISCREAMCOLOUR) for the T-shirt, which is emblazoned with a rainbow, two Black cherubs, and the ever-relevant words “Black Lives Matter.” Available in sizes small to XL, it’s made from 100% cotton and will ship at the end of June.
Plant People’s new Advanced Immune Power capsules form the foundation of a comprehensive health and wellness routine. Taking two to three capsules twice daily (there are 60 in the bottle) improves energy, provides support for your immune system, and makes your body more capable of absorbing helpful elements. Inside each capsule is a 1000mg combination of fungi, roots, vitamins, and trace minerals.
With 100% of their proceeds directed to the COVID-19 Protest Relief Fund, The Canvas Agency Shop is selling eight very different, equally appealing, prints from artists they represent. One of our favorites, “PAW PAW AND STARS” by illustrator Sonya Korshenboym depicts a delightful and oddly proportioned pooch gazing up at the cosmos. It’s printed on poster-sized paper.
From independent publishing house Atelier Éditions, the two-volume monograph John Cage: A Mycological Foray explores the acclaimed (and often experimental) American composer and theorist’s fascination with mushrooms. As Cage famously proclaimed, “I have come to the conclusion that much can be learned about music by devoting oneself to the mushroom.” Limited to an edition of 75, the book features 20 unnumbered lithographs, diary entries and the first-ever full reproduction of Cage’s Mushroom Book, done in collaboration with illustrator Lois Long and botanist Alexander H Smith, in 1972.
Launched on Juneteenth, Internal Knowledge and Are.na’s Chess Camp label explores “strategy, empathy, psychological freedom, and Black history.” From them, this new T-shirt directs 100% of proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective. “Internal Knowledge Chess Camp: Juneteenth 2020” adorns the front of the 100% cotton shirt, while a green and ivory chessboard occupies the back. The release comes accompanied by a wealth of educational videos, resources, printed materials and more, which lives on Are.na’s idea-sharing platform as Chess Camp vol.1.
Founded by Kacey Lynch in 2014, the South Central LA-based label Bricks & Wood draws upon its neighborhood for inspiration. Their six-panel corduroy cap, a new silhouette for the brand, features a short brim. The 100% cotton paisley fabric is a deadstock material they brought back to life for the piece.
Made from 100% polyester, this bright bag is lightweight but still robust enough to cart groceries, and the mesh fabric proves itself to be super-practical for use as a beach bag. Amsterdam-based Daily Paper creates sporty apparel and accessories inspired by the African heritage of their founders (Hussein Suleiman, Jefferson Osei and Abderrahmane Trabsini) as well as ’90s skate- and street-wear and more, to produce an overall retro-futuristic look. The brand has worked on several collaboration collections, including one with the Van Gogh Museum.
Expedition Subsahara was founded by Senegal-born, St Louis-based Sofi Seck, who wants to “translate handmade goods into girls’ education” by selling gorgeous, authentic home decor and accessories made by African artisans—herself included. Of their woven goods (many made using a traditional Senegalese coil-weave technique), our favorites are the large lidded baskets—which can be used as large planters, for storing linens, or even as the type of laundry hamper one would be delighted to have on display.
Owned and run by James Flemons, the LA-based label Phlemuns has released a face mask featuring their dreamy cloud print. Incorporating adjustable straps and nose bridge, it’s crafted from a blended cotton-poly fabric and includes a 100% cotton inner layer. While non-medical, these masks still protect the wearer and those nearby from harmful germs.
By NYC-based illustrator, animator and visual designer Amika Cooper (aka blackpowerbarbie), this “Saint Jeff” print is inspired by Jeffrey Williams and, as Cooper says, “divine feminine energy.” Rich, vibrant colors abound on the artwork, which features its subject beneath a halo. Cooper (who works as a freelance creative) also sells other prints that span her different styles online.
Made with no added scents, the Featherweight hydrating body gloss from Oui The People comprises various oils—squalane (from olives), rosehip and avocado oil—but doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. Providing the nourishment and hydration not offered by water-based lotions, this body oil seals in moisture, leaving skin soft and smooth, while also creating a subtle sheen. Oui The People founder Karen Young says their mission is to buck the antiquated messaging around women’s grooming and beauty, rejecting words like “perfecting” and “anti-aging,” in order to make “efficacious products, designed thoughtfully, that help you feel great in the skin you’re already in.”
From Ouigi Theodore’s Brooklyn Circus, the subdued green Release America Crewneck features a striped version of the brand’s logo, a googly-eyed Statue of Liberty and a map of the United States. All the motifs have been hand-printed on the garment, which is made from a heavy, ring-spun cotton/poly fleece. All seams incorporate a reverse cover stitch, making them extra-strong. Available in small to XL, the boxy sweater suits all genders, and is available in blush pink, too.
Aether’s high-top Dalton sneakers feature an upper crafted from supple Italian leather and a Japanese leather lining. For comfort and support, D30—a shock-absorbing material typically used in motorcycling gear—is embedded at the ankles and under the insole. Made in Portugal, these shoes pair timelessness with innovation, making them ideal for everyday wear. Available in Onyx, Nordic Navy and Duffle Green, they come with a lifetime guarantee from the LA-based brand.
Designed by Justina Blakeney for her company Jungalow, this peace vase emanates the positivity Blakeney aims for with all her products. The ceramic vase (available in six different colors) stands 13 inches tall, and has a distinct retro charm. Blakeney’s LA-based brand also routinely donates to non-profits, including the ACLU, The Rainforest Alliance, The Downtown Women’s Center and others.
From this year’s Reebok Pride collection, the colorful, all-gender Club C 85 shoes nod to the ’80s with their paint-splatter style. Script on the tongue, accompanied by a rainbow graphic, honors all types of love and all types of people. Along with their campaign and the new releases, Reebok is donating $75K to the It Gets Better Project, an LGTBQ+ outreach program that aims to support and connect LGBTQ+ youth around the world.
