Kickstarter + For Freedoms’ 50 Billboards in 50 States

Public art through the largest creative collaboration in US history

Known as “The 50 States Initiative,” an epic artistic undertaking has started its funding process now on Kickstarter. The brainchild of For Freedoms, an artist-led non-profit organization founded by Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, the initiative plans to unveil 52 different billboards, one in every US state, as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico. It isn’t a partisan activation in any way. Rather, the goal of the billboards—hopefully going up September through November—is to make everyone feel comfortable with civic engagement and discourse. The organization plans to work with several different artists including CH favorites Theaster Gates and Marilyn Minter. As proposed, this is the largest creative collaboration in US history—and it’s an important and empowering one.

Each billboard is funding separately on Kickstarter now, and needs to reach $3000. A pledge of $10 or more makes donors an acknowledged supporter of the project.
