Homegrown Pure and Simple

Chef Michel Nischan is a source of inspiration for me as both a cook and someone passionate about food (especially organically raised food), family and friends. His new book, (with the help of formidable food writer Mary Goodbody), Homegrown Pure and Simple is a wonderful combination of his love for his mother and her simple garden cooking, his experiences and skills as a world-class chef, and his desire to cook healthfully.

These three desires connect with the reader and in the kitchen. Many of the recipes are simple to prepare and don't take up half of your day. They are a reflection of what's fresh–either in your garden or at the local market–and emphasize natural flavors over complexity. The book is well-designed, the recipes easy to follow (especially if you have a juicer on hand), and has some beautiful photography.

Try the Skillet Pork Roast, the Skillet-Browned Broccoli and Cauliflower, and the Watermelon Lemonade. And if you're not familiar with his first book, Taste Pure and Simple, check it out. It's a favorite resource of mine.
