Handmade Towels: Dar Gitane

Luxurious handwoven textiles from the coast of South Africa

The new year has us updating our old routines around the house, and fresh linens seem like one of the easiest ways to make a clean start. This week, we’ve gathered up five beautifully crafted towels to help spruce up the bath and get us going on cold mornings. For our Wednesday pick, an instant classic, the handwoven blockrib bath towel from Dar Gitane.

While traveling through South Africa, owner and founder of Dar Gitane, Alina Preciado came across Mungo Design, a weaving collective dedicated to preserving traditional linen-making techniques including those employed for the blockrib weave towels. Knowing she had found something special, Preciado partnered with Mungo in order to bring these ultra-soft and deceptively thick towels to her Brooklyn store. The best part about the blockrib weave is its loose construction which dries quickly despite the luxurious weight of the ringspun cotton. Detailed only with eyelash fringe at each end, this towel’s beauty is in its simplicity.

The blockrib weave towels sell for $58 each through Dar Gitane’s site, and are available in South Africa via Mungo’s online retail store.
