While here in Milan with our Design Master Classes at the Magazzini space in Tortona, Heineken has announced their next Open Design Exploration with a focus on creating a new vision for lounging. The project will premiere at next year’s Milan Design Week.

Lee Gibson—interior designer and Open Design Explorations alum—will be mentoring the interior designers on the team. As an inspirational kickoff, Gibson created a multi-positional sofa for Heineken’s Magazzini that acts as a physical manifestation of the lounge theme.

The teams in each city will explore the best lounges and share their findings with the other teams, the combined learnings and inspiration will result in the team’s vision for the lounge.

The lounge program will take many months to create, design and execute, which means that designers who live in Mexico City, Singapore, Warsaw and New York City who want to be a part of the experience should apply right away. Applicants from all over the world are invited to enter at Heineken’s Tumblr. Anyone can contribute to the program by adding #FutureLoungeDesign to inspirational images on Instagram, which get added to the Tumblr feed.

Nightlife enthusiasts are encouraged to partake by uploading Instagram pictures of innovative lounge bars with the hashtag #futureloungedesign, and the best images will be shared on Heineken’s Tumblr. Heineken will also be posing one question each week to its 12 million Facebook fans about the makings of a good lounge, with their input going to inform the design. Watch the announcement video to find out more.
