Land Rover Announces All-New 2020 Defender

The redesigned classic utility vehicle will also make its way to North America

While not as good as getting one for the holidays, Land Rover has officially announced the long expected news that the all-new next generation Defender will debut in 2019 as a 2020 model year. Better yet, they’ve confirmed that the car will be sold in North America.

The iconic vehicle maintained its cult style and status for seventy years before being retired, while design and production retooled for this all-new generation. As with the previous generation we’ll likely see different sized Defenders as well as a range of powertrains over the next few years. For now we have to make do with this early tease, a camouflaged vehicle that’s likely got a few extra bits attached to the body to help keep us guessing at its final shape.

What we do know is that the classic will be entirely new inside and out, with a shape “honoring the model’s history for rugged durability, while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century” alongside the tech and driver assistance tools found in the brand’s other models. Some will inevitably dislike the new Defender because it isn’t similar enough to its legacy; others will appreciate the vehicle’s journey and its future-forward evolution. In any case we can’t wait to get behind the wheel and see it on (and off) the road in North America.
