Shinola + WorkOf Benefit Auction for Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
Designers from NYC and LA create one-off holiday ornaments worth keeping
Detroit-based Shinola and online maker marketplace WorkOf have come together to spread some holiday cheer with a special showcase auction run by Paddle8. They’ve tapped designers from the East and West Coasts to create unique, one-off ornaments that put the ubiquitous bauble to shame. Many familiar names abound like Chen & Kai, Helen Levi (who made a hangable miniature of her sought-after ceramic mugs), Surname Goods, Allied Maker and more—and each of the 34 lots is exquisite. Spotlighting the lovingly made and the creative energy of the maker community, the auction will benefit the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
“Paddle8’s focus on benefit auctions enabled us to raise money for MOCAD, which felt like a really compelling thing to do given the time of year,” WorkOf founder Charlie Miner tells CH. “They also extended our reach by connecting us to their dedicated following of young collectors, all of whom we felt would appreciate both the WorkOf and Shinola brands. Finally, their focus on technology and design gave us a really well designed, clean online interface to list and sell these amazing pieces of art,” WorkOf founder, Charlie Miner tells us.
Standouts who thought “outside the ornament” include the Plant-in City collective breathing life into the inanimate object by suspending air plants, Bed-Stuy-based Wintercheck Factory rewarding the “naughty” by framing a lump of coal in pine, Stephen Kenn crafting a steel snowflake and furniture-maker Taylor Donsker paying tribute to LA with a dazzling cast bronze “billboard” and wooden hillside.
Bids start at $50 and the Shinola + WorkOf auction will close 17 December 2015 at 3PM EST.
