Updated daily, the Buy section is a deep directory of stuff we love. From this collection we organize Gift Guides for the holiday season and special occasions all year long.
Jacques’ Movement compression shorts (available in black, navy or bone) comprise a shell and liner, providing plenty of coverage and support. The four-way stretch fabric proves flexible, and also boasts odor- and temperature-control technology, UV protection, as well as moisture-wicking. Plus, the sophisticated-yet-durable gridded nylon fabric retains its shape even when stretched.
This stunning 600-page monograph, Kara Walker: A Black Hole Is Everything a Star Longs to Be, comprises 700 works on paper by the artist from 1992 to 2020, most of which are being published for the first time as they’ve been in Walker’s private archive. Handwritten notes, typed index cards, sketches and journal entries provide readers with intimate insight on the art. Aptly, Walker provides the foreword. Designed by Gavillet & Cie, the cloth-bound book features essays by the deputy director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Anita Haldemann; curator and cultural historian, Maurice Berger; and artist and critic, Aria Dean. The book has been published to accompany Walker’s exhibition, also called A Black Hole Is Everything a Star Longs to Be.
Constructed in NYC from dead stock vintage 100% cotton, Steven Alan’s Double Pocket Alpine Shirt Jacket fits and feels like a well-loved thrift find, but looks like a high-end garment. Purposefully oversized to accommodate a T-shirt (or even a heavier sweater) underneath, the emerald-hued jacket also features plenty of rich textural elements. Cobblecord is a delightful gridded version of corduroy we were unfamiliar with before wearing this jacket. Matching pants in a lounge-y cut are also available.
Love and Other Poems, the third collection from award-winning poet Alex Dimitrov, provides readers moments of reflection and wit, weakness and joy. Through his intimate, thoughtful and emotive lines, Dimitrov explores loneliness and hope, the sensations of time and longing for place—with repeat references to NYC and the power of presence it wields. Though Dimitrov’s paperback book is finite, one of the poems within is not; the title poem “Love” continues within a Twitter handle, @apoemcalledlove, where the poet adds one tweet each day.
Launched in 2005, Tony’s Chocolonely was founded when Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken was investigating the cocoa industry and found most grocery store chocolate was made from ingredients harvested by enslaved people. Working directly with farmers at seven cocoa cooperatives in Ghana and Ivory Coast, Tony’s Chocolonely makes fair trade treats that taste extra delicious. Our pick is the Dark Chocolate Pretzel and Toffee Bar which contains crunchy sweet and savory chunks.
While they come with loose instructions, there’s no right or wrong way to assemble Four Eyes Ceramics’ chime kits. Available in six color combinations, each kit comes with 18 ceramic pieces and 36 inches of string with a loop and bead at the top for easy hanging. If you want your chime to make noise, make sure some pieces are tied closely enough together to touch, but if not, space them out more. Other than that, there are no rules, but they do suggest bringing chimes indoors during wild weather.
Ghetto Gastro’s “Bronx Baldwin” long-sleeve T-shirt, featuring a portrait of James Baldwin, is part of a collection that honors some of the legends educated at the Bronx’s DeWitt Clinton High School. Initially released last year, the shirt—which was designed by New Studio—has been made for all genders and comes in size small to XXL.
In the style of Experimental Jetset’s popular “&” shirts, this “And Me” T-shirt calls out four major movements and organizations that have shaped the fight for civil rights in America: the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Black Lives Matter (BLM). Proceeds from the sale of each shirt will benefit the Tides Network non-profit—a group that assists other non-profits focused on equality and human rights with fiscal tools, policy-making and even collaborative workspaces. The shirts are cotton and available in black or white colorways.
Your Super’s rich magic mushroom powder comprises six ingredients: cacao, chaga, ashwagandha, reishi, lucuma and cinnamon. Every component was sourced directly by the brand, through select purveyors in Peru, China and India. Together, they work to support and strengthen your immune system, and assist with stress management—whether you mix the powder into warm milk or water or add it to a smoothie. Inside each order there are 30 servings (one tablespoon each) and the mix is certified organic, non-GMO, plant-based and gluten-free.
Each piece of jewelry from EDAS—Philadelphia-born, Brooklyn-based Sade Mims’ accessories label—is carefully made by hand. The Hattie necklace, crafted from gold-plated brass, can be worn alone as a statement piece or layered along with others. It’s available on a 16-inch or 18-inch chain. Mims also makes gorgeous beaded bags and hats in her Bed-Stuy studio, but they routinely sell out, so keep an eye out.
CDMX-based menswear label Hermanos Koumori references Mexican modernism, esotericism and, surprisingly, the sport of running in each of their collections. Their newest line, fittingly called Ancient Runners, features graphic T-shirts adorned with exercise instructions and ancient riddles, pants in unique silhouettes and a coat they refer to as the “World Champion’s Jacket.” Cut from 100% cotton raw denim and constructed in CDMX, every jacket comes adorned with Koumori’s signature flower silkscreen pattern in a rich, worn black hue. Yellowed acetate buttons contrast the black-and-white garment, which comes pre-washed.
Measuring 35 by 35 inches (and available in cotton or silk), John Derian’s mushrooms scarves feature more than two dozen illustrations of fungi—all in the East Village, NYC-based designer and decoupage artist’s signature style. The scarves were produced in collaboration with Tokyo-based brand Arts & Science and made in Japan.
Whether you’re sitting around the house in a snowstorm or walking down the beach in a light breeze, these colorful board shorts, hand-crocheted in Brooklyn, will set a playful mood. They’re made using 87% merino wool and 13% polyester, with both types of yarn made in Italy. Artwork by Gordon Flores is hand-embroidered over the knit, creating multiple layers of color, pattern and texture to admire.
Handcrafted from lead-free ceramic materials and coated in a food-safe glaze, Summerland’s The Land Yacht features two chambers for holding more smoke. But the bigger dimensions don’t make this bong bulky, rather it boasts a sculptural appeal. The bold blue hue sharpens its lines and highlights the carefully crafted silicone grommet’s attachment point. Just under 13 inches tall and seven inches wide, each Land Yacht will be the same size, but other variations may occur due to the handmade nature of each piece.
By Jenna Wortham and Kimberly Drew, the glorious and dynamic book Black Futures features essays, artwork, photos, poetry, dialogues, recipes, infographics and even tweets and memes to illustrate the expansive and ever-evolving realm of Black creativity and culture. Visually vibrant, mentally stimulating and entirely inspiring, the book entrances and inspires—but also makes a call for equality, inclusion and celebration of Black joy and imagination.
