Artisanal luxury goods support V-Day’s global women’s initiative
Approximately one in three—that’s the statistic for women who will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, a demographic that works out to one billion worldwide. Eve Ensler and her nonprofit, V-Day, aim to change this statistic with One Billion Rising, a global call to action for people to “walk out, dance, rise up and demand” a stop to the violence. To support OBR’s cause, a group of designers recently created Fashion Rising, a collection that will hopefully develop sustainable fashion and artisanal businesses for women around the world.
Created by luxury goods guru Abrima Erwiah and actress Rosario Dawson of Studio One Eighty Nine, the line is composed of bags and accessories for men and women. Designers behind the line include friend of CH Geren Lockhart of Geren Ford, Menzer Hajiyeva and Gold Coast Trading’s Emeka Alams, among others. Each item represents textiles and craftsmanship of women around the world, with 10% of each sale going toward OBR. From kimonos produced in Uganda to colorful hand-painted bags from a Brazilian atelier, the collection reflects OBR’s international community.
For the lookbook, Fashion Rising turned to Ghanaian creatives to model the clothing and photographer Allen Coleman to shoot the collection in Accra, Ghana. The full results can be seen at Fashion Rising’s Tumblr, and you can sign up at Studio One Eighty Nine’s website to receive updates on the collection, which will launch online and at select retailers Spring 2013.
