Advisory Board Crystals Launches Fantastic Four Collectible Series
Marvel fans have another way to celebrate their favorite family with blind box sneakers and high design apparel
Los Angeles-based Advisory Board Crystals (Abc.) recently launched its Marvel Fantastic Four Collectible Series, celebrating the iconic characters throughout several eras since the original comic’s 1961 release. This isn’t an average merch launch, though. Inspired by the mystery-pack concept of collectible sports cards and surprise action figure scores, Abc. is selling blind boxes of collectible sneakers, plus t-shirts and character-inspired outfits with equal doses of nostalgia and creativity and a nod to retro-futurism, all in a thoughtfully designed package.
Aligned with the 25 July U.S. release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Abc. reminds us that it’s more than a typical clothing brand. It blurs the boundaries between art and contemporary fashion while collaborating with artists and using garments to foster new conversations and ideas.
This particular launch will resonate with Marvel fans and collectors alike. Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing might have been part of the cultural zeitgeist for almost 65 years, but today’s version of the family is anything but dated. Abc. plays off the retro vibe of the 1960s setting, fusing the graphics, color palettes and materials of the series with a modernized, tactile, wearable experience. Even the packaging references the blister packs we grew up with, adding a core memory-inducing, whimsical touch to the whole experience.
“Partnering with Marvel allowed us to channel that inspiration into something profoundly resonant,” says Remington Guest, Advisory Board Crystals co-founder and Marvel fan. “Viewing shoes and apparel as sculptural art, we treated this collection like premium toys: maximalist, detailed and immersive.”
The collectible pieces are truly a mystery to those lucky enough to get their hands on one: it could be a unique shoe with its own character box, a psychedelic tee inspired by one of The Four family members or even a mod ’60s outfit with an artistic twist.
