NYC’s ever-changing conceptual retail experience, STORY is unveiling How Original!—a collaboration with Peanuts and the Peanuts Global Artist Collective—today. The collection (part of the shop’s 41st installation) is made up of riffs and re-imaginings of Charles M Schulz’s timeless Peanuts cast by seven artists in collaboration with 14 brands.
The Peanuts Global Artist Collective—André Saraiva x Mr. A, Nina Chanel Abney, AVAF, FriendsWithYou, Kenny Scharf, Rob Pruitt and Tomokazu Matsuyama—work to reinterpret the original works through news lenses for new audiences. Their debut piece being huge public murals all over—from San Francisco to Seoul, Mexico City and beyond. Now, they bring their Schulz-inspired pieces to Chelsea.
Not only celebrating the likes of Charlie Brown, Woodstock and more, the items created by the collective will likely bring the Peanuts characters to a new audience. The limited edition products come together by melding the artwork of the aforementioned artists with the canvasses of products from prominent brands—including Champion, PinTrill, Huf, Herschel, Kway, AWAY and Corkcicle, and others. Everything from skate decks to temporary tattoos, apparel, bags and books have been lovingly adorned with Snoopy and the gang—and in ways never seen before.
Standouts from the collection, for their originality and their sheer exclusivity, are aplenty. But the Nina Chanel Abney-adorned Herschel tote bag and Huf skate deck are definite favorites—her bold, geometric reimagining of Snoopy is at first surprising, but entirely endearing.
Further, Mr A’s graphics turn a standard Champion sweatshirt into a playful piece. And children’s brand Mi Cielo took the work of all artists in the collective and made each into adorable onesies.
Explore How Original! at STORY (144 10th Avenue) today through 7 October.
