Live-Streaming Disasters
Launched within just a month of each other, new social media platforms Meerkat and Periscope both favor live-streaming videos over text or photos, giving users an in-the-moment experience and urgency to participate. The release of Twitter-owned Periscope coincided with a devastating and tragic building fire in NYC’s East Village and saw many people flocking to the app to stream the ongoing disaster—which poses the question: is it unethical to broadcast or even watch an event if lives are in danger?
