Simply put, a river is a powerful entity: its constant movement shapes everything around it, connecting global bodies of water while sustaining life, culture, economy and more. For those looking to make an authentic, intimate connection with a river, there’s a unique opportunity happening on the Rhine in the Netherlands this fall.

Hydroformations, a long-term research program, is partnering with POST —Platform for Contemporary Art— to host Rhine River Lab: Meeting a River from 8 to 12 October, 2025 in Arnhem. Meeting a River encourages interdisciplinary participants to establish a new relationship with the Rhine and its importance through collaboration, research, creative experiments and more. Artists, researchers, scientists and other curious creatives who want to explore the river through a new lens are invited to apply.

The Rhine is significant to the Netherlands; after meandering through landlocked European countries and connecting almost all Dutch waterways, it ends in Rotterdam at the largest port in all of Europe. This is a rare chance to appreciate the river’s noteworthiness not in economic terms, but to connect with it in a new way. Think exploration rather than extraction, devotion rather than domination. Through various artistic and hands-on methods along the river itself, Meeting a River encourages one to listen to the voice of the powerful Rhine and finally let it speak for itself.

For more information and to apply, visit Hydroformations.com. Applications must be submitted by Friday, 15 August 2025.
