App That Teaches Africa’s Two Most Spoken Languages

Super-popular app Duolingo already offers lessons for commonly spoken languages like French, Portuguese and Spanish, but users had been asking about another important language—and the company listened. Spoken in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Comoros islands and in parts in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, Swahili is now available to learn via your phone. Zulu will be next and possibly after that, Afrikaans. This is a significant step for Duolingo, who previously didn’t offer any African languages and—as Quartz says—this move could “build commercial and cultural bridges.” Read more at Quartz.
