New York Awaits The Mysterious Corpse Flower

Watch our video from the last time the remarkable plant stunk up the city

Today or Thursday, the mysterious, magical and stinky Corpse Flower is set to bloom at the Haupt Conservatory at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Also known as Amorphophallus Titanum (meaning “large misshapen phallus”), the flower—when blooming—smells rotten and generates heat in order to attract beetles and flies to pollenate. While that is all remarkable enough, this is also an extremely rare occasion: the last time the Corpse Flower bloomed and stunk up the Bronx was back in 1939.

Watch our video about the odorous and wondrous plant, from back in 2006, when we visited a blooming Corpse Flower at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.
