Dissecting Song Lyrics Through a Feminist Filter
Combining music, film and commentary, British-Jamaican filmmaker Cecile Emeke explores the strong emotional impact—whether good or bad—song lyrics can create in her new docu-series “Lines.” “Sometimes it’s a line that you’ve heard a hundred times and it’s only on the 101st time that it clicked and meant something to you, or sometimes it’s a line that grabs your attention right away,” she explains. For the first episode, Emeke asks five feminists to reveal a line from a song that especially moved them, producing a wide range of powerful lyrics from songs like Destiny Child’s “Nasty Girl” to Mos Def’s “Umi Says.” Watch the full video on Dazed.
