Our crafternoon with stencil-guru Ed Roth and his new style-focused book

Drawn to stenciling years ago as affordable form of art, stencil artist Ed Roth is now an industry wizard, applying his chosen medium to everything from postcards to rugs. Roth, a talented artist and natural teacher, recently stopped by CH HQ for a fulfilled crafternoon using the stencils from his latest book, a style-focused how-to guide on customizing everything from a pair of Chuck Taylors to bike helmets to bangles.

Stencil Style 101” is the fifth in Roth’s series of instructional books, each containing an extensive set of easy-to-apply stencils and step-by-step instructions tailored to each project. We spent the afternoon with the former gallerist and graphic artist learning tips on subtle gradation, creating clean lines and the gentle use of paint. Baggu generously donated a few Duck bags to our cause, which we found to be an ideal canvas for getting crafty.

Like Roth’s other books on the topic, the stencils in his latest book draw inspiration from street art and other iconic style imagery. Like any good 101, the useful edition walks you through the creative process while offering some imaginative suggestions on how to begin. Filled with 25 original reusable stencils, there are seemingly endless combinations to be made.
