When Acne Studios proposed a collection with the outdoor-focused Fjällräven, the latter brand found themselves embarking on their first-ever collaboration. “We were honored when Acne Studios approached us, and curious too, because we’ve never done anything like this before,” Henrik Andersson, Head of Innovation and Design for Fjällräven tells us. “We say no to so many requests to collaborate, but we were intrigued by the approach from Acne Studios. After inspiring discussions with Jonny Johansson at Acne Studios and his team, we set out to create this limited collection.”
Launching in select Fjällräven and Acne Studio stores, the new designs merge the bright colors of Fjällräven with oversized, oftentimes boxy silhouettes from Acne Studios. They focused on creating reinterpretations of Fjällräven’s Expedition Down jacket, Greenland jacket, and Kånkens bag that have all become hallmarks of Swedish apparel design. With Fjällräven’s love of outdoor culture and Acne’s multidisciplinary approach to fashion, combining forces created a new way to bring their “Swedishness” to new audiences.
The 13-item collection includes the aforementioned Expedition Down jacket in two color-ways and in UN blue with a printed lining. The line also features the Greenland jacket, the Anorak shirt, a few t-shirts, Gaiter trousers for all genders, the Kånken Tarpaulin in four colorways, a Kånken messenger in four colorways, and a mini Kånken clutch–as well as Acne’s interpretation of Fjällräven’s two-seasons sleeping bag. For the collaboration the Kånken bag features collection specific “Acne pink” leather handles and a bottom panel in a heavy tarpaulin fabric for re-enforcement. The bag has an updated “Acne pink” leather logo label–with co-branded buckles and press buttons.
“First of all we have a high respect for Acne Studios,” says Andersson. As much as we are different, we also have common ground. We are both global brands with a strong Swedish history, we’re both a bit stubborn and we both share a relentless attention to detail. While Acne Studios is very much about the artistic expression, we are all about functional products for the outdoors, with a goal to bring people closer to nature. This has been a good base for a dynamic collaboration. Ultimately, with this collection, we would like to reach out to more people. Showing new customers the iconic products that we are proud of, and hopefully inspire them to discover and spend more time in nature.”
The Fjällraven + Acne Studios collaborative collection will be available for a limited time at Fjällräven stores in NYC, Amsterdam, Oslo, Hong Kong, Toronto, at select Acne Studios boutiques, and online at Fjällräven.
