Long before wellness became one of hospitality’s defining movements, Westin recognized that true luxury begins with how we feel. In 1999, the brand introduced the Heavenly Bed, a concept that transformed the humble hotel room essential into a symbol of restoration. At a time when the industry rarely considered sleep as part of the guest journey, Westin made rest the centerpiece of the experience, introducing a new standard for comfort and care.

The launch was as imaginative as it was revolutionary. To mark the arrival of the Heavenly Bed, Westin staged an unforgettable moment of theater and possibility: a skydiver descended over the Savannah River before landing on one of the signature beds below. The gesture captured the brand’s belief that innovation should not simply improve hospitality; it should redefine the way people experience it.

The Heavenly Bed became the foundation of Westin’s wider wellbeing philosophy, inspiring a holistic approach centered around sleep, movement, nourishment, mindfulness and connection. Today, that vision continues in some of the world’s most remarkable destinations, where the environment itself becomes part of the healing experience.

Few places embody this philosophy more naturally than The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa. Here, beneath the towering presence of Mount Otemanu and surrounded by one of the most breathtaking lagoons on Earth, wellbeing is not something that needs to be created; it is already present in the landscape.

The journey begins the moment guests arrive, welcomed with reusable metal water bottles filled with fresh water, a thoughtful introduction to the resort’s commitment to sustainability and mindful travel. From there, time begins to move differently. Days unfold according to the rhythm of the tides, the movement of the sun and the gentle pace of island life.

A Private World Above the Water

The resort’s 142 bungalows appear to float between sky and sea, offering guests an intimate connection with the natural beauty of Bora Bora. There’s 128 overwater bungalows that capture the essence of the destination: turquoise waters stretching endlessly toward the horizon, views of the volcanic silhouette of Mount Otemanu and direct access to the lagoon from private decks. Inside, glass floor panels, among the largest in Bora Bora, reveal the vibrant marine world below, transforming the lagoon into a living artwork.

Some residences offer private plunge pools suspended above the water, while select bungalows include separate living spaces designed for longer stays and deeper relaxation. For families or those seeking a closer connection to the shore, the 14 beach bungalows provide a more grounded retreat, combining privacy, comfort, and sweeping lagoon views. Ten feature private plunge pools, creating secluded spaces where guests can move effortlessly between land and water.

Every detail reflects a simple philosophy: luxury is not about excess, but about creating the space to reconnect.

The Flavors of French Polynesia

In Bora Bora, food tells the story of the islands. It reflects the generosity of the ocean, the abundance of the land, and traditions shaped over generations.

At Tipanier, named after the island’s fragrant tropical flower, dining unfolds in an elegant French Polynesian setting. Guests begin their mornings with a breakfast overlooking the lagoon before returning later in the day for dishes with seasonal ingredients and local flavors.

For a more intimate culinary experience, Maere offers a constantly evolving menu celebrating fresh, locally sourced produce paired with carefully selected wines. With panoramic lagoon views and a tranquil atmosphere, it captures the quiet sophistication of island dining.

At Varavara, the mood is effortless: beachfront dining, ocean breezes and a menu inspired by the meeting point between the Pacific and Mediterranean. Fresh fish, grilled specialties and vibrant cocktails create the perfect accompaniment to days spent under the Polynesian sun.

The resort’s bars offer their own rituals. Honu Tiki brings cocktails and light bites directly to the beach, while Te Ava’s swim-up bar allows guests to drift between the infinity pool and the panoramic views of Bora Bora. At sunset, ‘O’A Bar becomes a gathering place where handcrafted cocktails, live music, and the silhouette of Mount Otemanu create one of the island’s most memorable moments.

A signature Bora Bora ritual, the canoe breakfast transforms a morning meal into a celebration of island life. A traditional Polynesian outrigger canoe, or va’a, adorned with tropical flowers glides across the turquoise lagoon and arrives at guests’ private overwater bungalows. As the gentle rhythm of the water surrounds the deck, a beautifully prepared, island-inspired breakfast is served overlooking the lagoon, creating an intimate moment that captures the beauty, heritage and tranquility of French Polynesia.

Discovering the Soul of the Islands

Beyond the beauty of the lagoon lies the deeper story of Bora Bora: its traditions, craftsmanship, and connection to nature. Guests are invited to experience Polynesian culture through daily activities that bring ancestral knowledge into the present. Coconut palm weaving, shell craft, pareo demonstrations, flower crown weaving and Tahitian dance classes offer opportunities to learn directly from local traditions. Wellness experiences including sunrise yoga, water yoga, Pilates and paddle yoga transform the lagoon and landscape into a natural sanctuary for movement and reflection.

One of the most immersive experiences is a hands-on cooking class celebrating one of Tahiti’s most iconic dishes: poisson cru, or Tahitian fish. Often compared to ceviche, this beloved Polynesian preparation is a celebration of simplicity and freshness. Guests learn to create the dish using fresh fish, delicately balanced with lime juice and enriched with coconut milk, discovering how a handful of ingredients can capture the essence of an entire destination. More than a cooking lesson, the experience offers a glimpse into the relationship between Polynesian culture and the ocean that sustains it.

As evening arrives, the island’s spirit comes alive through traditional celebrations featuring music, dance, and ceremonial dress. These gatherings invite guests not to simply observe Polynesian culture, but to share in it.

Adventure, Reflection and the Natural World

Bora Bora has always inspired exploration, and the resort’s experiences encourage guests to discover the island from every perspective. During the Shark & Ray Experience, guests travel across the lagoon to encounter gentle stingrays and blacktip reef sharks in their natural habitat before snorkeling through vibrant coral gardens. The experience reveals the extraordinary ecosystem hidden beneath the surface, reminding guests that some of the world’s greatest wonders exist just beyond the shore.

For a quieter moment, a morning sound bath offers a final ritual of reflection before departure. As the sounds resonate across the peaceful surroundings, guests are invited to slow down, reconnect and carry the calm of Bora Bora with them.

The Bora Bora Pearl Farm Experience introduces guests to another symbol of the islands: the Tahitian black pearl. During a private visit, guests discover the meticulous process behind cultivating these rare gems and learn about a tradition deeply woven into French Polynesia’s cultural identity. Each pearl carries the story of the lagoon from which it emerged.

Protecting the Paradise That Inspires it All

The future of Bora Bora depends on protecting the natural environment that makes it extraordinary. Through Eco Center Bora Bora, the resort supports marine conservation and the protection of sea turtles, one of the island’s most treasured species.

Established in 2000 in collaboration with the Direction of the Environment (DIREN) of French Polynesia, the center focuses on conservation efforts, environmental education and raising awareness among visitors and local communities. It reflects a broader commitment to preserving the delicate ecosystems of French Polynesia for generations to come.

At The Westin Bora Bora Resort & Spa, wellbeing is not defined by a single treatment or experience. It exists in the quiet moments: waking above a turquoise lagoon, preparing a dish that carries generations of island heritage, moving with the rhythm of the ocean or watching the last light of day disappear behind Mount Otemanu.
