While Hennessy might be a recognizable brand, many of us aren’t aware of the cognac’s nuances—or remain wary of cognac in general due to a lack of understanding. On a recent summer afternoon, the team at CH learned that Hennessy Black (which launched back in 2010) is more than a smooth and intense drink to sip neat—it’s also ideal for mixing (or even replacing your favorite go-to spirit) in a cocktail.
Mimosas and Bloody Marys seem to be the go-to cocktails for a lazy weekend brunch, but cocktail-maker extraordinaire Tomas Delos Reyes taught us inventive ways to use Hennessy Black in impressive cocktails, and the one we were particularly drawn to was his Brunch Martini. A delightfully refreshing take on a classic, this cocktail is citrus-heavy for those who like it tart, but is sweetened by the addition of marmalade. For anybody who feels unsure about cognac—or indeed a martini—the Brunch Martini is a surprisingly zesty and refreshing sip.
2 oz Hennessy Black
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
heaped bar spoon of marmalade
Place all ingredients into a shaker over plenty of ice and shake vigorously. Strain and pour into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a twist of orange peel and serve.
Hennessy Black is available for purchase online and nationwide.
