Premiere: “Big Sky” by Pearl Lion

The SNL house band guitarist’s ethereal instrumental pairs with shots of Joshua Tree, Antelope Canyon and more

Making us want to plan a road trip immediately is this stunning montage of visuals captured by Dan Huiting (whose music video resume includes Sylvan Esso, Caroline Smith, and lots of Bon Iver) for Pearl Lion’s film soundtrack-like instrumental “Big Sky.” “I was in LA and I just got this guitar pedal called ‘Big Sky,'” Pearl Lion aka Jared Scharff (who has been the guitarist in Saturday Night Live’s house band since 2007) tells CH. “I found this ethereal sound and instantly started playing what became the song. It felt more like I was channeling the song than writing it. I had no idea why or what this song was about, or where it came from but it felt universally connected to everyone in some way.” Fittingly, the imagery features universally overwhelming destinations along the American Southwest that everyone should see at least once before they die: time lapse shots of Joshua Tree National Park, Bonneville Salt Flats, Zion National Park, Antelope Canyon and more.

Pearl Lion will later be debuting two instrumental mini-albums, Dark and Light (which includes “Big Sky”), to show off Scharff’s versatile style.
