Ressence Type 1H Limited Edition Wristwatch for Hodinkee

A skeletonized German silver dial exposes the inner-workings of a piece bearing uncommon innovation

One of the most respected voices within the horological community, the team at Hodinkee‘s expertise continues to extend beyond editorial taste. Their latest limited edition collaboration, the Type 1H, sees a partnership with one of Switzerland’s most transfixing brands, Ressence. We at CH have fawned over mastermind Benoît Mintiens’ pieces for years, particularly admiring his use of a distinct domed crystal and refractive liquid in the Type 3. For the Type 1H, Ressence has skeletonized a German silver dial, allowing a glimpse at the mechanics within—for the first time ever. Visually, it manages to convey a nostalgic, industrial aesthetic all the while maintaining a presence undeniably future-forward. As with the standard Type 1, there’s no crown—to set the time, you twist the caseback. And at 41.5mm, it’s a reasonably-sized stainless steel case. Further tweaks and refinements abound—from sandblasting to a lug change—but altogether it’s an automatic timepiece unlike any other, overseen by two of the brightest teams in the watch world.

The Ressence Type 1H for Hodinkee is available today at the Hodinkee webstore. Only 20 pieces were made, and are available for $22,500 each.
