Material juxtaposition in two furniture pieces by a pair of young Spanish designers

Exploring the satisfying contrast between powder-coated metal and raw or lacquered wood, young Spanish design studio LaSelva highlighted their petite collection of mixed material furniture at this year’s Feria Habitat Valencia. On view at the Nude platform, the new range includes a Gossip floor lamp and Supernova tables.

Named for the act of leaning in to hear some secretive words, the hooded Gossip lamp can be angled downward to cast its LED light toward the floor, or up to cover a broader area with ambient light. LaSelva’s industrial designers David Galvañ and Manuel Bañó feel the light finds its real identity in the warmth of the light ash wood contrasting with the cold LED lights hidden deep within the aluminum shade.

The Supernova series, on the other hand, swaps the raw wood for a lacquered finish inspired by the 1950s. The crocheted cotton suspended underneath the tabletops hints at the playful design the Spanish are known for, while also adding a practical storage place for magazines and other odds and ends.
