Rivian Unveils the First Electric Pickup “Adventure Vehicle”
The all-electric pickup goes from 0-60 in three seconds and has a range of 400 miles
The rapidly evolving electric vehicle space is starting to get really exciting, with large brands and indie makers seeking to innovate in all segments of the growing market. Rivian, an Irvine, California-based maker of the futuristic R1T–an all-electric pickup truck that debuted today at the LA Auto Show this week–is the perfect example (see our previous coverage on the show here). The sleek and slightly menacing pickup truck features a bold new design language–and one the team feels is ready to be embraced.
Misconceptions about electric vehicles include the notion that they forfeit power when they forgo fuel-burning or don’t provide enough range. The R1T goes from 0-60 in three seconds (nearly twice as fast as the next fastest, the 2018 Ford F-150, at 5.6 seconds), has a towing capacity of 5,000 kg and 750 total hp provided by its four electric motors, massively more than the 2018 Ford F-450 and its market leading diesel powered 440 hp. Misconception no longer.
Whether working on off-road terrain or city streets, the R1T’s 400 mile range (the top battery spec) provides drivers ample supply to spend a day driving. Level 3 autonomous driving will be available (meaning hands and eyes off the road) with additional features that enable “active lifestyles.” The connected dashboard features over-the-air updates and is outfitted with entertainment and navigation tools.
Production of the R1T–and their SUV option, the R1S–are expected to begin in 2020, and pre-orders are available for both now (with a $1,000 deposit). The R1T starts at a reasonable $61,500, the R1S at $65,000—more expensive than their gas and diesel powered kin—but Rivian aims to be an option for the outdoor-loving, eco-friendly and luxe-loving drivers who need the flexibility of a pickup (or pretend that they do).
