Originally released in 2009, Hipstamatic was an icon of its time: an iPhone app that allowed users to take photos and apply retro-looking filters, colorful flashes and more. Based on the analog Hipstamatic 100 camera, the app also offered extra paid features. While playful, the app fell out of favor some years ago but it’s now being relaunched today exclusively for iOS.
The most notable difference is that the app now incorporates a community aspect, with users allowed to follow up to 99 people. That number has been carefully chosen to keep a personalized, chronological feed that’s algorithm- and advertisement-free. The focus is about sharing and enjoying pictures—a welcome return of a creative and playful platform designed for photography enthusiasts.
