Icelandic DNA Sheds Light on Disease
A group of scientists in Iceland have successfully sequenced the full DNA of over 2,600 Icelandic citizens. Using this information, they were then able to infer the genomes of more than 100,000 other Icelanders, which amounts to approximately a third of the entire population. This breakthrough discovery allows the scientists to pinpoint the origins of certain common diseases by tracing them back to their original genetic mutation. The scientists hope to use this unprecedented study to inform future treatments.
