After much anticipation, Paul Newman’s very own Paul Newman Daytona went up for auction at Phillips in NYC this week. Many suspected in advance that it would shatter multiple records. In actuality, by the time the auction ended (after 12 minutes of bidding) the Rolex had snagged the title of the world’s most expensive wristwatch. It’s certainly an iconic model, but this particular watch was given to Newman by Joanne Woodward, who had it engraved with “DRIVE CAREFULLY ME.” Owner James Cox will be giving a large portion of the proceeds to the Nell Newman Foundation. Hodinkee was present for the auction and has all the details.
