Anyone who has made the switch to an electric toothbrush understands the immediate value. They are proven, when used properly, to deliver a deeper clean and healthier gums. With the brand new Philips Sonicare Flexcare Platinum, there’s an additional step toward encouraging dental health: a Bluetooth connected 3D mouth mapping application. Yes, the toothbrush also has the two most important features everyone has come to love about the brand: Adaptive Clean Brush Heads and a three-mode brushing system. But the app actually gets sent data, can build a profile of brushing habits and offers personalized coaching toward betterment. It’s all thanks to a smart sensor technology that tracks scrubbing, pressure and location.
Sally Revell, Director of Consumer Marketing, Digital and Connected Innovation explained to us that it’s “The only type of technology available of its kind on the market.” The team has been developing the product for over a year and they “spent a lot of time walking in the shoes of our consumers and dental professionals.” Aleksandro Grabulov, the Director of Innovation and Development at Philips Sonicare goes deeper into the technology. “First, it’s very much focused on the sensors. We embedded a series of them—all haptic—in the handle, all for accurate location placement. It also has a gyro and an accelerometer,” he says. Further, “We also innovated through the algorithms, which are combined contextually to survey the state of the issues in your mouth. There’s also context around how you behave—all of which generates a very personalized coaching system.” Grabulov also affirms that there’s nothing else out there like the Flexcare Platinum. And while we’ve only just begun the process of longterm testing, the immediacy of the knowledge alone has proven to be valuable.
