Stepping beyond their basic but brilliant Essentials collection, Converse has unveiled the forthcoming 17-piece Urban Utility collection, stepping in to the outdoors-inspired urban outerwear game full force. And to mark the new line launch there’s a capsule collection of bold and highly expressive pieces created in collaboration with Slam Jam and artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt—both lending the collection a clear voice. Converse has included both footwear and new apparel items here, with several new inline pieces featured in the latter. The message is one honoring freedom of expression, with the slogan “Your Silence Gets You Nothing” appearing in multiple languages. Further, and as expected, utility factors into the collection beyond just the name. These are next level staples with personality, and elements like waterproof fabrics developed in collaboration with GORE-TEX demonstrate that function is just as important as fashion here.
Of the weatherized outerwear, the collection’s star is a Utility Jacket, made from 3-layer nylon waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX—and fully sealed seams. Others include a men’s Utility Pant from 6.6 oz cotton poplin and an olive submarine colored Military FZ hoodie from 465 grams of heavyweight French terry. There is an essential thermal tee, as well as long and short sleeve shirts. And, of course, there’s the footwear. The technical details are all alluring and mark a commitment from the brand on the materials front. However, it’s the messaging that really makes this special—especially for such an important global brand.
Converse Urban Utility footwear and outerwear will be available on 5 December at select retailers and online.
