The Message is Medium Rare

A keen burger blog tackling culinary reviews with an expert eye for design

A wise man once said “not all burgers are created equal.” They come in all shapes and sizes, with and without adornments, but at the end of the day, the only way to really know a burger is to meet it with your mouth and mind. Blending an intellectual and gastronomic approach to finding the best burgers in the Bay Area, two designers have created the exceptionally clever burger blog, The Message is Medium Rare. The idea is this: each week for an entire year, a burger will be eaten and subsequently considered through the lens of a design nerd. Which is certainly something we can get behind.

“Every burger is a unique metaphor for a design challenge,” explains Christopher Simmons, one of the two behind the site. After consuming a pair of identical burgers, notes are shared, a verdict is reached and a creative lesson learned. “It’s part design blog, part food blog and 100% a labor of love (with health consequences).”

While we certainly can’t forget our friends at fellow burger blog Burgerac, we must tip our hat to the sheer level of intellect invested in each review on The Message is Medium Rare. Even before you reach a review, the title itself—a play on Marshal McLuhan and Quentin Fiore’s “The Medium is the Message”—stares you in the face. And with eight of 52 burger reviews already up, we’ve already seen an experimental breakfast burger compared to the work of Spanish illustrator Alex Trochut, a particularly bare burger approached as if it were a sans serif typeface as well as a floral reminder that good design relies on balance, thanks to an all-lettuce burger from Roam. Needless to say, we’re curious to see what’s next. Follow along as the year continues at The Message is Medium Rare.
