Mike Mills presents a 2013 calendar inspired by the age of punk
For the 18th installment of The Thing Quarterly, the object-based periodical relied on Mike Mills to create a 2013 pocket calendar. Mills, a filmmaker and visual artist, has presented work at Sundance Film Festival and as part of MoMA’s New Directors New Films series, and is perhaps best known for the award-winning 2010 film “Beginners.” The issue, entitled “Fabric of Events,” takes a cue from punk rock culture to create a minimalist, black-and-white calendar for the coming year.
Along with the calendar is a mini survey of past cultural events and photographs rendered in black dots. The run of 600 booklets joins literary shower curtains and cutting boards with crying instructions as part of The Thing Quarterly’s creative archive.
