Detroit-based Shinola celebrates the life of their hometown girl with a collection of two watches and a travel jewelry case, with proceeds going to Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit, one location of the charity and community organization she founded. If you aren’t familiar with her, she was an iconic comedian that was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, from 1975-1980. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was 40, she died at 43. Shinola’s collection includes three red pieces, celebrating her favor color—two watches, the Great American Series Runabout 25mm, limited to 300 pieces, the Runwell Automatic 39mm, limited to 400 pieces, and a thoughtfully designed limited edition travel jewelry case. At a recent visit to the Fancy Food Show, a trade show for gourmet foods, we met longtime CH reader Noah Phillips. We always love when that happens, even more so when they are up to something interesting. Noah loves honey, but doesn’t love having to manage it in containers where it often solidifies, or is thinned out to dispense more easily which often makes a mess. As any passionate entrepreneur does they solve the problem by making their own, and Honey Department was born (it also helps that his dad is a beekeeper). The single source honey comes from bees that pollinate Mexican wildflower and mesquite blossoms. He calls it “thick honey” and it’s packaged in an aluminum tube. Thick, because it is naturally thickened into a creamy paste, a perfect consistency for putting on your food more precisely, smoothly and without waste. Need more? Just squeeze the tube; when you’ve finished it, recycle it. We’ve tried it on food, in recipes, in beverages, and we’ve even been seen carrying the small tube around to share with people (these are currently an added bonus when you buy a three pack, but will soon be sold separately). Until then, you can buy a single 6 oz tube for $16, or buy in larger packs at a lower price.

We’ve been testing it for several weeks and are really happy with the results. As you know cold brew is one of the gentlest brewing methods, preserving all of the taste with with substantially less acid. It starts with a hot water bloom to get the coffee primed, then moves to cold brewing, all based on the parameters you’ve set. A fresh cold brew takes around 10 minutes (which varies based on brew volume) and a Kyoto-style slow drip method (our favorite) is also available (which takes around an hour, also based on brew volume). Founded by passionate runners who wanted to enjoy post-run cold brew, they developed their own system when alternatives were lacking. The machine is thoughtfully engineered, with a simple control dial on top of the machine that rotates through brewing options. The grounds cup attaches magnetically.
