Phone Tatami Mat

At a recent sushi dinner in Tokyo we were presented with a rectangular tatami mat. It was both a thoughtful gesture and a moment to put our phones screen-side down and focus on our meal. Founded in 1740,  Kuboki Tatami makes a full range of tatami products and clearly isn’t stuck in its past, continuing to bring tatami to the way people live. The Perfect Weekend Tote

Alex Mill brazenly calls it The Perfect Tote, but it really is the perfect tote. It comes in several sizes and many colors, but The Perfect Weekend Tote is our favorite, hitting that just-right spot for an overnight. It has both hand and shoulder straps (the latter can hide in the bag when not in use) and the length of the shoulder straps is spot on. Opinel No. 8 National Parks Guide Series

Opinel is a legendary knifemaker founded in 1890 in the French Alps. Even if you don’t think you “know” Opinel, you probably actually do. Their No. 8 consists of a wood handle carved entirely from a single piece of certified, sustainably harvested beech, a simple, circular metal lockring and a steel blade. Opinels have starred in television series and films like the French Connection II, and now Opinel has commissioned a limited National Parks Guide Series, featuring Yellowstone, Great Smoky Mountains and the Grand Canyon as envisioned through the eyes of local artists. The knife artwork is unique, a bit whimsical and we love that it comes with an accompanying Wildsam field guide to each park. Summerdown Peppermint Dark Chocolate Crisp Bar (2 Bars)

Summerdown started growing Black Mitcham peppermint, an heirloom varietal, around thirty years ago. The farmers found and painstakingly brought cuttings back to England, and with lots of time and care the finicky plant settled in; today it’s grown on 100 acres. Once harvested it’s distilled and barrel-aged, and powers many products that the farm produces. They make several chocolates but the bar is the easiest to travel with, and as we’re always on the go it’s what you’ll often find in our everyday carry. Made from 70% Colombian chocolate, it has a light dusting of sugar crystals to give it a little crunch. Each bar is 100g / 3.5oz, price is for a two pack.

Dometic’s Sip Bottle 650ml is high on engineering and features and very accessibly priced at $40. Apple’s new AirTag looks identical to the original, but nearly everything that matters has been upgraded. Powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the latest model extends Precision Finding range by up to 50 percent, adds a significantly further Bluetooth detection range and introduces a speaker that’s 50 percent louder, making misplaced items easier to locate by sound alone. For the first time, Precision Finding also works directly from Apple Watch Series 9 and later, bringing haptic guidance to the wrist. Despite the internal overhaul, pricing remains unchanged at $29 for a single tag or $99 for a four-pack. Side by side, the only way to tell the new AirTag from the original is a subtle detail on the stainless steel back: the etched text appears in ALL CAPS on the new model, while the previous generation uses Title Case.

Away With The Tides Umbrella By Calida Rawles

If you have the opportunity to see Calida Rawles’s Away With The Tides show at the Pérez Art Museum Miami before it closes 2 February 2025 it’s well worth seeing in person. The seminal work celebrates residents of Overtown, one of Miami’s historically black neighborhoods near the museum, who are experiencing the ocean for the first time at the historic Virginia Key Beach nearby. The now-closed beach was the first “official colored only” beach in Miami and a much loved location for decades. This umbrella features one of the installation’s most powerful images, and ironically protects you from the rain while celebrating the joy of being submerged in water. The umbrella is 34″ high and 36.5″ in diameter when open. The show’s catalog is both a great companion to the umbrella as well as a must-have coffee table book or addition to your library.
