Magnetron Carabiner

Most classic locking climbing carabiners have two innate design flaws. The gate closes against a hooked beak that tends to catch the rope. And, typically, you have to thread them shut, too. Black Diamond’s latest Magnetron is better. As its name suggests, it uses magnets both at the hookless nose and for the sliders on either side of the gate, and there’s no hook. Instead, the magnets instantly fasten the lock shut, requiring no secondary action. That saves you energy during a taxing climb. Another bonus: the Magnetron is made of 25% pre-consumer recycled aluminum, so manufacturing them burns less carbon.

Many people aren’t aware that Ferrari did not have an in-house design department until 2010, and that the first car entirely designed by its Centro Stile is the 2013 LaFerrari. In 2010 Flavio Manzoni joined the company to create the department, encompassing interior, exterior and color and trim designers, modelers and others. Trashy Goods pretty much sums up this new brand started by two friends with big smiles, a passionate  appreciation for good design and for doing something about the growing concern about waste materials. They are launching with a round tray that comes in either 12″ or 16″ in a variety of materials—sustainably harvested cork, recycled plastic, flip flops and bottle caps, used fishing nets and upcycled denim—in a variety of colors. The Gilda Radner Great American Series collection

Thick Honey

At a recent visit to the Fancy Food Show, a trade show for gourmet foods, we met longtime CH reader Noah Phillips. We always love when that happens, even more so when they are up to something interesting. Noah loves honey, but doesn’t love having to manage it in containers where it often solidifies, or is thinned out to dispense more easily which often makes a mess. As any passionate entrepreneur does they solve the problem by making their own, and Honey Department was born (it also helps that his dad is a beekeeper). The single source honey comes from bees that pollinate Mexican wildflower and mesquite blossoms. He calls it “thick honey” and it’s packaged in an aluminum tube. Thick, because it is naturally thickened into a creamy paste, a perfect consistency for putting on your food more precisely, smoothly and without waste. Need more? Just squeeze the tube; when you’ve finished it, recycle it. We’ve tried it on food, in recipes, in beverages, and we’ve even been seen carrying the small tube around to share with people (these are currently an added bonus when you buy a three pack, but will soon be sold separately).
